THE LETTER VAV (و) – Maraş Work, a Composition Inspired by Calligraphic Aesthetics
Artwork Details
This artwork focuses on the letter "Vav," which holds a special place in Islamic calligraphic aesthetics and mystical interpretive tradition. Although it may appear to be a single-letter composition, Vav has for centuries been associated with meanings such as humility, servitude, creation, and introspection.
Formal interpretations suggesting its resemblance to a fetus in the womb have linked Vav to the creation of humanity; in the Sufi tradition, this paved the way for it to be regarded as a symbol of submission and self-effacement. The multiple Vav forms brought together in this work create a strong visual integrity through the rhythm provided by repetition.
The composition is an effective interpretation demonstrating how profoundly aesthetic and spiritual connotations a single letter can convey.
